Bizarre Punk Rock Dinosaur Bristling With Spikes Discovered in Morocco
A strange dinosaur just changed everything scientists thought they knew about armored dinosaurs. This one is not just spiky. It is bristling. Discovered in Morocco, Spicomellus afer is unlike anything seen before. With its ribs fused to giant spikes, it is basically the punk rocker of the Jurassic.
It is believed to be the oldest known ankylosaur ever found, dating back 165 million years. That pushes the timeline of armored dinosaurs further back than anyone expected. And it is the first of its kind discovered in Africa, expanding the map of where these tank-like creatures once roamed.
Science / Spicomellus afer was found in the Atlas Mountains near Boulemane, Morocco. At first, it didn’t look like much: A single rib fragment found in 2021. But then came more fossils in 2022 and 2023, and things got interesting.
What paleontologists found wasn’t just another prehistoric lizard. It was something jaw-droppingly weird.
Spicomellus afer was about 13 feet long and weighed up to 2 tons. That is roughly the size of a small car. But it wasn’t its size that turned heads. It was the way its armor grew directly from its ribs. Long, sharp spikes stuck out from its sides, neck, and hips.
Why All the Spikes?
Some of these spikes stretched nearly 3 feet long, especially around the neck. The dinosaur also had a thick bony collar, big hip spikes, and possibly a tail weapon. Scientists aren’t sure if it was a club or more spikes.
The armor looks like it could stop predators in their tracks, but there is a twist. Some of the spikes are so long and oddly placed that they probably got in the way when the animal moved through forests or thick plants. That means these features weren’t just about defense.
Most later ankylosaurs, like the famous Ankylosaurus, had heavy armor designed purely for survival. Spicomellus, though, looks more like a show-off. Scientists think the spikes may have played a role in display behavior, like attracting mates or warning rivals.
That flips old ideas on their heads. For years, experts thought early ankylosaurs started simple and only got flashier later. Spicomellus proves it might have been the other way around.

Professor Richard Butler put it best: “The most elaborate ankylosaur armor of all time is present in the oldest member of the group.” That is not what anyone expected. The usual story was that armor got more advanced over time. But Spicomellus, with all its over-the-top features, was already turning heads back in the Jurassic.
This forces scientists to rethink how armored dinosaurs evolved. Maybe they didn’t slowly add spikes over millions of years. Maybe some of them were born wild and weird, and later ankylosaurs actually toned it down. It is a big shift in thinking.
Spicomellus is the first ankylosaur found in Africa. That means these dinosaurs had a wider range than scientists thought. They weren’t just stomping around North America and Asia. They were thriving in ancient Africa, too.
