After 4 Decades in Congress, Nancy Pelosi Announces Retirement

November 18, 2025

Nancy Pelosi just dropped a political bombshell. After nearly four decades in Congress, she is officially stepping away. On November 6, 2025, the 85-year-old Democratic Party supremo announced she won’t seek re-election next year. Her current term will end in January 2027. That is when she will pack up her Capitol office for good.

This marks the close of a major chapter in American politics. Pelosi has been at the heart of Washington power plays since the late '80s. She has seen it all - partisan battles, global crises, economic crashes, and political upheaval. Through it, she stayed a top player, known for her sharp discipline, strategic mind, and a grip on the House that even her critics had to respect.

Nancy / IG / Pelosi’s political career started back in 1987 when she won a special election to represent San Francisco. Since then, she has been re-elected 19 times, racking up 20 terms in Congress.

But tenure is just one part of her story. What made Pelosi a landmark figure wasn’t just how long she served, but how she led. In 2007, Pelosi became the first woman to ever hold the Speaker of the House role. Then she came back for a second round in 2019 and led through the storm of the Trump years and a global pandemic.

Under her watch, some of the biggest legislative swings in recent history happened. She helped push through the Affordable Care Act, which reshaped healthcare for millions. During COVID-19, she played a key role in passing the American Rescue Plan. And she fought hard for infrastructure and climate bills under President Biden. Love her or not, Pelosi got things done.

Her style was strict and focused. She didn’t chase headlines. She kept her caucus in line and the machine moving. Even critics admitted it. When Pelosi was in charge, the Democrats knew who was running the show.

Now, with her retirement clock ticking, the political world is reacting in full force. Former President Barack Obama called her “one of the best speakers the House of Representatives has ever had.” President Biden took it even further, calling her “the best Speaker of the House in American history.” That is no small praise from two Democratic giants.

But on the other side of the aisle, reactions were a lot less warm. Former President Donald Trump, never one to hold back, called her “an evil woman” and said her exit was “a great thing for America.” Their feud was long and bitter, from fiery impeachment showdowns to that viral moment when Pelosi ripped up Trump’s State of the Union speech.

Nancy / IG / Pelosi says she is staying sharp and active until the end of her term. “Know your power,” she told her supporters, repeating a favorite line she has used for years.

But make no mistake, her seat is now up for grabs. And that is going to spark a political battle in her home turf. San Francisco’s congressional district is heavily Democratic, but the fight to replace Pelosi won’t be easy. State Senator Scott Wiener is already being talked about as a front-runner. So is Saikat Chakrabarti, known for his ties to progressive circles and past work with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The race could get rough. Pelosi’s long presence gave her district stability. With her stepping out, the next generation of left-leaning leaders will scramble to define the future. Expect national attention, big campaign dollars, and lots of noise.
